A Vision for the New Rwanda

In history, there is sometimes a convergence of events that, upon reflection, lead to global change. At the brink of such another series of events, AFRICA & RWANDA YES WE CAN is the chosen strategy and the linchpin to the change we need. The Rwanda Democratic Green Vision presents leading-edge thinking and rational, realistic solutions for all the issues facing Rwandans from the past. We are making a national and international call for a New Rwanda, for real Change, 2009 and beyond.

The Democratic Green Party solutions are rational because this Party, unlike other parties, understands the scientifically verified limits to growth set by the carrying capacity of our planet. We must work within these limits. Otherwise, we will exhaust resources, degrade our environment and put our economy, health and children's future at risk.

The Democratic Green Party of Rwanda will be guided by knowledgeable, informed and experienced leaders over the the years to come. The plan for our future as Africans at home and abroad and the world in its fullest will be implemented.

DGPR will ensure constructive and beneficial dialogues that leads to planning and actionable steps, it will continue to generate transformational thinking that results in children, youth and adults prepared to work together across boundaries, languages and cultures to effect change on the continent of Africa, Rwanda and globally.

Our solutions are realistic, because they follow "best practices" already in place in parts of Rwanda or other countries. These practices are cost-effective, deliver results and benefit people, the economy and the environment. The Democratic Green Party's down-to-earth solutions will work in Rwanda because they have worked around the world. Many have been successfully applied in Europe, America, Canada, Australia and elsewhere, where Greens are elected at all political levels, including the European Union and national parliaments. Countries where Greens have served in government are the countries creating new high-paying jobs while simultaneously meeting targets to reduce "green house" gas emissions. They are the countries where the gap between rich and poor is small and the standard of living is high. These countries don't trade off the environment for the economy. Their economies and environmental laws are both strong.

Many people find it hard to position the DGPR on the old political spectrum. We believe in sound fiscal management and strengthening our economy while ensuring that it is sustainable. Does that mean we are "right wing" ? We believe that government must provide needed social services while protecting our environment and the rights of women, minorities and disadvantaged people. Does that make us "left wing" ? Perhaps. More and more people are simply thinking of the Democratic Green Party as the party of change and a party for a new Rwanda.

The DGPR is different from other parties in another important way. We will never place the pursuit of power above principle. We will not allow partisan politics to get in the way of good ideas and needed actions. We agree with Rwandans who say it's time for parties in parliament to stop bickering and get on with the job of combating poverty, climate change, taking better care of our environment, our health and our economy. Old Parties have failed Rwandans. Its now past the time they all resigned for their failures to the electorates.

There is only one true DGPR. We are not like the old line parties who "talk green" when seeking your vote but sideline real green action once elected. You can trust us to stay true to our promises and champion the issues "you and we" care about.

"Nothing else in the world...not all the armies...is so powerful as an idea whose time has come."

Victor Hugo.

What kind of Rwanda do we want in 2050?

How do we get there from here ?

The DGPR holds a positive Vision for Rwanda, now and into the future.

We will strive to support a society where the pressure to make a living does not crowd out having a life ; where having more does not supplant being more.

In our Rwanda Democratic Green Vision, Rwandans will enjoy a higher quality of life, experiencing health and wellness, education and meaningful work, prosperity and economic success supported by ecological health.

In our vision of Rwanda, ability or disability, economic, racial, or cultural backgrounds do not preclude individuals from contributing to and benefiting from a prosperous Rwanda.

Rwandan communities – urban and rural – thrive in our Democratic Green Vision, including communities dependent on fisheries, forestry and agriculture.

Rwanda will play a positive role in the world, working cooperatively with governments, North and South, to ensure equity, global security and peace, its time for Rwanda not to be involved in any armed conflict. We want no more guns, we want food, water, clean energy, clothes, schools, hospitals and sustainable infrastructure. We want no more wasting of national budget on unnecessary agendas.

Real policies in the real world can lead us to a better future. Poor policies, badly conceived, imperfectly imagined and poorly implemented could leave our children and their children in an unlivable Rwanda. The DGPR believes that improvement can be made immediately while recognizing that long term planning is essential if generations to come are to benefit. We shall have a Democratic Green Vision 2050. With your help, we can make it real.

These are the steps we will take forward. These are the policies we will advance to other parties. We will work collaboratively with the government to shift priorities, to promote those innovative ideas whose time has come. We shall use a three code strategy : DCC, meaning : Diplomacy, Cooperation and Competition.

"Freedom is not something that one people can bestow on another as a gift. Thy claim it as their own and none can keep it from them."

Kwame Nkrumah, Founder of African Union and First President of Ghana.

We start with a vision of the society we all want !

All our policies will speak to the fundamental elements of our cohesive, coherent and achievable vision. Each policy will be examined through the following lenses :

  • Does it advance the common good ?
  • Does it advance global security, in environmental and geo-political terms ?
  • Does it address the needs of children ?
  • Does it ensure Rwanda's continued quality of life and economic health ?
  • Does it make families more secure ?
  • Does it protect, enhance and restore the life support systems of the planet ?
  • Does it promote systems — cultural, institutional, and technological — that are resilient and capable of adapting to shocks in a more unpredictable world ?

"We, the generation that faces the next century, can add the solemn injunction 'If we don't do the impossible, we shall be faced with the unthinkable'."

Petra Kelly, Founder, Green Party of Germany
